Yankees Scramble as Granderson out 10 Weeks

Curtis Granderson | Prominent Tickets
The hits just keep coming for the New York Yankees. After a noticeably low-key offseason where the club hardly made any noise on the free agent market, the Bronx Bombers suffered another blow this past weekend, losing slugger Curtis Granderson to a broken forearm. Granderson, who suffered the injury after being hit in the wrist by a pitch, is projected to miss 10 weeks with the injury, with a potential return to the lineup sometime in May. The Yanks had already let veteran free agent outfielders Nick Swisher and Raul Ibanez walk during the offseason, so this latest dent to the lineup is even more devastating. Though Granderson only hit .232 a season ago, he did belt 43 home runs for the club a season ago, and that power will not be easy to replace. Continue reading

USGA Contemplates Anchored Putter Ban

Masters Golf Tournament | Prominent Ticket Service
Right around the time that fans are expected to be clamoring for Masters golf tickets, the United States Golf Association (USGA) is expected to announce its ruling regarding the practice of anchored putting in its events. Anchored putting, which includes belly putters and broomstick handles that are placed against the chest, gives the golfer more stability through the entire put. This practice has risen dramatically in recent years, as three of the past five major tournament winners have used anchored putters. Ernie Els, who long believed that anchoring should not be allowed, switched to a belly putter a couple years ago, and the switch helped him win the British Open last summer. He is now in favor of allowing the long putters, which should not be a surprise given how successful he was with it. Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott and Webb Simpson all also use an anchor putter, and the use of the club is becoming more popular every year. Continue reading

Carmelo Anthony | Prominent Tickets
Despite a less than stellar January, the New York Knicks remain one of the top teams in the East, trailing the Miami Heat by four games through the first 50 contests of the season. While it is going to be difficult to catch Miami at this point in the season, the Knicks do have to worry about the two teams right behind them in the standings, the Pacers and the Nets. With the trade deadline looming, New York could be trying to work out a deal that will help them hold off their top challengers in the East. Continue reading

Melton among Pro Bowl Defenders Hitting Free Agency

Henry Melton | Prominent Ticket Service

Offensive stars and Pro Bowlers are not the only players that will be cashing in during free agency this year, as a number of key defenders will re-sign with their current clubs or change teams next month. The best defensive player on the open market could be Bears’ defensive tackle Henry Melton. The former college running back blossomed into one of the best pass-rushing DTs in ex-coach Lovie Smith’s Tampa-2 defensive scheme, racking up 15.5 sacks from his interior line position since being drafted in 2010 and earning a Pro Bowl nod this past season. Defensive tackles who can rush the passer like Melton can are extremely rare, making him one of the most valuable commodities in the league, particularly to teams that run a 4-3 defensive front. Spring training is here, and the New York Yankees are just one of 30 teams that are beginning their preparation for the 2013 season. But with this new series of allegations, Rodriguez’ past will again be front and center during camp, and the rest of his teammates will have to answer countless questions about the situation. National Signing Day is one of the biggest days of the college football season, and teams that have their eyes set on punching BCS Championship tickets loaded up on some incredible talent. After losing standout RB Eddie Lacy to the NFL Draft, the Tide went out and got Altee Tenpenny, Alvin Kamara and Derrick Henry, three of the best RBs in the country. Notre Dame came up a bit short in the national title game, but Brian Kelly was still able to go out and get a lot of players that should help keep the Irish in contention. ND went out to California and got to players previously committed to USC in defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes and safety Max Redfield, and also locked up impressive outside linebacker Jaylon Smith and running back Greg Bryant, who should be able to step in and produce immediately.
