The Brooklyn Nets were originally of the ABA (American Basketball Association) and were founded in 1967 playing under the name of the New Jersey Americans.  They won 2 ABA Championships before being accepted as one of the 4 teams from the ABA to be admitted to the NBA as part of the ABA-NBA merger, officially making them the New Jersey Nets.  The nets enjoyed moderate success after joining the NBA only making two NBA Finals appearances (2001-02, 2002-03), losing them both.  The Nets decision to move to Brooklyn in 2012 was unanimously approved by the NBA Board of Governors to Barclay Center.  The move was strongly endorsed by rap mogul and Brooklyn native Jay-Z.  However Nets majority owner Mikhail Prokhorov was the real architect behind the move, funding a 700 million dollar loan in order to build Barclay
